A proposal was put forth last night by the County Commission to eliminate $426,000 for homeless support services in the upcoming County budget. $392,000 of that amount is funding for 5 case manager positions for Moore Place. Those positions are the heart of the supportive services plan that makes programs like Moore Place succeed.
The Urban Ministry Center has done research that shows the cost to our community for a homeless individual averages $37,000/year where as programs like Moore Place only cost an average of $10,700/year per person. With the 85 residents that will be housed at Moore Place, the annual savings of $27,000/person will actually save our community $2,295,000 a year. It would be short sighted of our community to ignore these simple facts and eliminate the funding to make this program succeed.
