Axiom Architecture was formed in 2007, but the roots of this partnership date back to 1980. That was the year that David Furman Architecture began. One of the leading names in multi-family housing, David Furman is widely recognized for establishing a new standard in forward-thinking design solutions. His work in the 1980s and 1990s changed the way people think about and experience multi-family and mixed-use development in North Carolina (Charlotte, Raleigh and Winston-Salem) Georgia (Atlanta) Virginia (Richmond) Tennessee (Chattanooga) South Carolina (Greenville) Kentucky (Lexington) and the Washington D.C. area. His impact continues to resonate around the East coast and the Southern United States.
Yet, even at the height of an architectural boom, David had never been one to settle for the status quo. He knew the time was right to expand his role and become a developer as well as an architect. That led to the creation of Centro Cityworks in 1999, an in-house development company. Its focus was on a new brand of urban development, anchored by strong design.
Over the years, many talented architects worked in David’s firms, but like any venture, the right fit at the right time is crucial. And that’s where two of Axiom’s managing partners become part of the story. Steve Barton and Matt Majors joined David’s office in the mid-1990s and continued to push new ideas into the market.
Axiom’s third managing partner, Colleen Garrett was brought on a few years later to help round out a thriving architectural office. While working with David – Steve, Matt and Colleen struck a unique balance between architecture and development management roles. Out of this, a strong architectural staff grew, with the group completing more than 4,000 housing units since 2000.
In 2007 Axiom Architecture evolved from David Furman Architecture with Steve, Matt and Colleen as managing partners. David remains an active partner today. This evolution enabled Axiom to not only maintain its talented staff but also grow into a larger, more diverse firm.
It is with this legacy of architecture and development that Axiom operates today, bringing the right solutions to meet today’s multi-family housing and mixed-use design and development needs.
