Betting big on South End

Charlotte architect and developer David Furman brought an initial concept for what would eventually become Camden Gallery to Camden Property Trust in 2012. It was an opportunity the firm’s principals couldn’t pass up, especially considering its location on the LYNX Blue Line in booming South End.

“We already had a great presence in the South End submarket and another site in pre-design, so it was a quadruple-down in the market,” said Will Smith, director of real estate investments at Camden.

A new generation of tenants at 1616 Center

When it delivered late last year, 1616 Center addressed two needs in South End — creative office space and ground-floor shops. Designed by David Furman, the 76,000-square-foot mixed-use project, developed by Charlotte-based Beacon Partners, was envisioned as a unique product that would visually reflect the neighborhood’s dynamic character and serve a need in the market. The building quickly leased up.

The five-story building sits at one of South End’s prime intersections, next to Price’s Chicken Coop at Camden Road and Kingston Avenue. Adding to its value is its proximity to the LYNX Blue Line, steps away from the building’s front door and an easily marketable amenity for retail and office tenants alike.

Charlotte construction firm upfits 1930s-era hangar for new office

Charlotte general contractor Edifice Inc. recently made a move from one adaptive-reuse office space to another in South End.

Edifice relocated this week from the former Coca-Cola bottling plant on West Morehead Street to the building at 4111 South Blvd., a structure built as two airplane hangars in the 1930s. The 20,000-square-foot building was dismantled and moved in 1955 to its current location in the Scaleybark part of South End, where it has since housed a crane-rental company, a tile shop and a boxing gym.
